Martin Luck Group was formed in 1982 in the Ancient Stannary Town of Tavistock in Devon, and soon after a Distribution Centre in Plymouth was opened. The workforce at the time consisted of 4 individuals, compared to the current workforce of over 80 local staff. Throughout the eighties the company continued to grow, and in 1992 acquired Ham & Sewell, another local company with strong links to the Cornish economy. At this time, the turnover of the company had grown to £2million.
Throughout the next ten years, the company continued to grow, becoming one of the largest Office Suppliers in the South West; whilst gaining numerous awards along the way. Martin Luck Group was also one of the first companies in the industry to qualify for both ISO14001 and ISO9001.
In 2006 further acquisitions were made, increasing Group revenues to £13million. This allowed Martin Luck Group to formulate three specialist divisions; Office Supplies, Design & Print, and Office Interiors. The most notable of acquisitions was Brewers of Cornwall - a print manufacturer since 1836.
Brewers, formally known as PS Brewer, were a print company operating from a small unit in Helston, Cornwall. Brewers were established in 1836, the year before Victoria became Queen of England, and the year the bicycle was invented! In 1971 Peter and John Brewer, the fourth generation, continued to operate the print business, and at that time employed David Rogers, who soon became a partner and started to sell office products.
The company moved in 1982, to a much larger unit on the industrial estate, which Brewers still operate from today. It was at this point that the major decision to move from letterpress to offset printing was taken. One of Brewers old letterpress machines is still on display in the Victorian Village display at the Helston theme park, Flambards. Offset printing was relatively new technology at this point, and Brewers made a major investment in new machinery to meet the demands of an ever changing market. In 1982 the company was turning over less than £200,000, and by 2006 the company's turnover was over £5million.
The Brewers brothers both retired by 2000, leaving David Rogers the sole owner. In 2006 he also decided to retire, and sold the company to Martin Luck Group from Plymouth. At this time Brewers, who had become a limited company, employed over 50 members of staff from the local community, and covered all corners of Cornwall on a daily basis. The name Brewers was a brand and was known by everyone in the county, so Martin Luck Group kept the name and incorporated their logos together. We continue to grow our business from our Print Works in Helston, and this facility makes us unique against our competitors.
In 2010 the original founding members of Martin Luck Group sold the company to SET Group - another market leading, family owned business, in Wales and the South West. The amalgamation allowed the company to capitalise on the combined £25million purchasing power shared across the Group brands of SET Office Supplies, Ross Office Supplies, Martin Luck Group & Brewers.
